ALFA is a no-cost youth soccer program in Victoria BC currently in it's 3rd year. The organization's objective is to avail dedicated kids a soccer experience they would otherwise only be able to attain through the expenditure of thousands of dollars. The cost of soccer locally is in such stark contrast to the rest of the world that it as a sad commentary on how we in Canada regard this global game which binds humanity and through which all ages are able to to achieve so much.
ALFA aims for an experience that is more than just elite soccer and are currently establishing relationships with first nations bands as well as new immigrant families with the ultimate goal of soccer being a common bond that can help to emphasize our likenesses over our differences and create positive unity where we live.
ALFA is currently fundraising for our first trip to Uruguay and Argentina in 2013 and we hope to develop our program to a point where we will be able to do this for a team every year or two for many years to come. We envision an exchange program with Uruguay where young players may come to Canada while young Canadian kids visit and play in Uruguay. These destinations were chosen for the reasons that my family are from Uruguay and Argentina and, more importantly, these are legendary breeding grounds for players of the beautiful game. These trips will provide life long memories for our teams of passionate soccer kids - something they would cherish for the rest of their lives and enrich their depth as human beings. To a young soccer enthusiast the experience of seeing the game in it's purest form in the countries which are deeply passionate about it will be priceless and we want to ensure kids that deserve great opportunities get them, regardless of economic background.
ALFA is working on a documentary on the program with local film maker Simon Game. The film will be titled "The Road to Montevideo" and will be a document of both the society's goals and of our inaugural group trip to Latin America.
