Early Music Vancouver and Pacific Baroque Orchestra present Handel’s wildly virtuosic Apollo e Dafne on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 7:30pm at The Vancouver Playhouse. When opera was banned in the late 17th century, audiences and composers turned to the cantata for their fix of lust, madness and death. This “mini opera” masquerading as “cantata” is full of the raw energy and joy that characterizes Handel’s early years in Italy. Acclaimed bass-baritone Douglas Williams stars as the god Apollo. Yulia Van Doren, a Russian-American soprano recognized by Opera Magazine as a “star to be”, plays the lovely maiden Dafne. Accompanying the stellar opera duo is the Juno-nominated Pacific Baroque Orchestra led by esteemed conductor Alexander Weimann. The programme also includes Bach’s Orchestral Suite in C Major.
