Event Description
Let us begin with acknowledging that we are holding this event on the traditional territory of the Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples. As most of us are settlers, it is important to understand that we are living on stolen unceded land. Colonization is an ongoing form of oppression. Let us acknowledge that it is our responsibility as settlers to do the work of decolonizing ourselves and our communities. It is our responsibility to stand in solidarity with Indigenous-led resistances in our communities and beyond.
Come join us on this winter day of December 17th to stand in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux against the Dakota Access Pipeline.
The Dakota Access Pipeline is 1,100 mile project, planned to run from North Dakota to Illinois. The pipeline has already destroyed many sacred sites, and threatens the drinking water of the Great Sioux Nation, and thousands living downstream. Indigenous people and allies have come together in prayer to protect the earth and protect the water. In peaceful demonstrations the water protectors have faced military violence and serious injuries. Standing Rock is a fight for Indigenous rights, human rights and the rights of the earth, rights that are being violated by Corporations for profit. The time is now to stand in solidarity with Standing Rock and with all frontlines of Indigenous resistance. We are aware that DAPL easement has been denied and it will be rerouted from crossing beneath the Missouri river, but this fight is not over. Support is still needed for all the water protectors who have made huge sacrifices in order to protect their land.
We will be donating 50% of the funds raised on this day to Standing Rock. The remaining 50% of funds will be donated to the Secwepemc Grassroots as they prepare to protect their land and stand against the Kinder Morgan pipeline that Trudeau has recently approved.
