Event Description
After their old flat becomes damaged, Emad (Shahab Hosseini) and Rana (Taraneh Alidoosti), a young couple living in Tehran, are forced to move into a new apartment not realizing that the former occupant was a prostitute.
Then one day, thinking it is Emad, Rana lets another man into the flat, while she is washing her hair, which goes against all the decencies in this conservative country. Rana reacts so violently she injures herself. Instead of involving the police, Emad wants to take matters into his own hands, and begins the search for the man that he wants to shame.
Adding to the couple’s high tension are their roles of Willy and Linda Loman in an amateur production of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. Art is impinging on life here and making it difficult for the couple to make reasoned decisions in their own best interests.
Director Farhadi’s break-out film, A Separation, won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. In The Salesman, he deals with the same themes of a society’s mores and again his careful camera work, the rhythm of the editing and the way he has structured his story builds a tension that doesn’t let go.
