Event Description
Victoria Folk Music Society weekly gathering, Open Stage 7:30pm, Feature Performers Backyard Boulevard at 9pm, 1110 Hillside Avenue, $8 cash, Everyone welcome!
Four Vic West musicians met on the boulevard behind banjo player James Anstey’s house one sunny afternoon early in the “COVID Isolation days” and a band was born!
Backyard Boulevard's scrumptious harmonies, well-crafted songwriting, engaging storytelling and exciting stage presence are sure to delight, entertain and inspire you to join in the chorus! Their repertoire features the original songs of Robert Anderson and Susan Ellenton along with campfire favourites and eclectic instrumentals.
Robert (vocals, guitar, mandolin) and Susan (vocals, accordion) have been VFMS regulars since the 1990s. Susan’s 2020 album of original songs, ‘Learning to Listen’ climbed to #9 on the Folk Alliance International charts, and in 2021 the duo toured the folk clubs of Vancouver Island.
Mark Johnson rounds out the group on bass and fiddle. He’s kept the groove going in the Canadian music scene playing bass for Albertan jazz performers Tommy Banks, PJ Perry, and Sandro Dominelli, and in the Alberta Latin music scene where he composed for and co-led Latin Jazz/Party band Cumako. Bluegrass aficionados will also recognize Mark as the string bass in the ‘Hoss Mountain String Band’, one of Victoria’s premier bluegrass bands.
