Event Description

These small, geometric embroideries evoke large scale modernist paintings of the 20th century. The tiny, labour intensive colour-field compositions, speak to the unrecognized labour of women’s work and situate this practice within the larger canon of abstract painting. The works are titled using a modernist trope of “Untitled” followed by the first names of my Irish mother and Aunties, who learned embroidery as a young girls in Ireland as a coming of age ritual and passed that knowledge on to me. This series of small embroidery/paintings that I made in 2018/19, were exhibited in a three-person show (with Emily Hermant and Kelsey Epp) titled, Slow Technology, at the Campbell River Art Gallery on Vancouver Island in 2019. The exhibition was curated by Jenelle Pasiechnik and examined “themes of gender, knowledge-transmission and how technology affects human interactions, through laboriously constructed artworks, woven and sewn in textile and telecommunications materials” (Canadian Art).
ngrid was born in Calgary, Alberta (Treaty 7 Territory). She is a first-generation Canadian with dual Irish/Canadian citizenship. Ingrid grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia (Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations), where she received a BFA and Diploma in Fine Art from the Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Later, she moved to Victoria, British Columbia (lək̓ʷəŋən territory) and earned an MFA in Painting from the University of Victoria. Ingrid is currently Director, Visual Arts Residencies, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.
