Event Description

Chesapeake songster Janie Meneely and internationally touring musician Rob van Sante join forces to present a lively brand of largely homespun music from the Chesapeake Bay and the world beyond. They present a variety of music as lively as it is eclectic, with songs culled from maritime traditions mixed with contemporary ballads about the ways of today’s world. Songwriter Janie’s lyrics buoyed by Rob’s musical arrangements recount heroic struggles of the past or show sensitive insight into contemporary issues.
From pirates to Point Lookout, the music of Janie Meneely celebrates especially the maritime history, characters, and traditions of the Chesapeake Bay. Her songs and stories ramble from the raucous ruminations of ne’er-do-well sea captains to more thoughtful ballads about the people who make a living “working” the water. “I don’t do any sea shantys,” Meneely says, although she admits to a few up her sleeve! Just as often, their songs spring from Rob’s repertoire, collected over a lifetime as a touring musician. Either way, Meneely & van Sante present a program laced with humor and energy.
Whether they sing of long-ago tragedy, retell a campfire ghost story, or offer up a song of social justice, Janie and Rob’s music invites audience participation, and that, to their mind, remains the most gratifying aspect of any given performance! Be ready to sing along!!
